The Inspiration: 'The Star Thrower' Story

This is the video version of the story, 'The Star Thrower' by Joel Barker based on the Loren Eiseley classic.

It is a story of a wise man who used to go to the ocean, walking on the beach before he began his writing.

One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a young man. At first, he thought that the young man was dancing. However, the young man was actually reaching down to the shore, picking up starfish, and throwing them into the ocean.

He came closer to the young man and asked why he threw them into the ocean. The young man replied that if he did not throw them in, they will die.

Then, the wise man commented that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along every mile which he could not possibly make a difference.

Hearing that, the young man bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said to the wise man, "I made a difference to that one!"
